Illustrious Illustrators

It was an artsy week at Illustrious Illustrators!

Monday

We learned the big role that shapes play in art. We then made pictures using basic shapes. In the afternoon, we discussed how illustrations help with storytelling, and we created illustrations to a popular folktale.

Making Shape Art!

Tuesday

We studied Maine author/illustrators Dahlov Ipcar and Chris Van Dusen. We created works of art that were inspired by these artists.

Building dream houses inspired by Chris Van Dusen's If I Built a House

Wednesday

The Juniors studied Mo Willem's Elephant and Piggie books and tried to emulate his style. The Seniors surprised the Juniors by putting on an Elephant and Piggie play.  The Seniors studied Calvin and Hobbs and made their own cartoons.

Thursday

We studied claymation. Each camper made their own claymation character and we created stop-motion claymation movies. Here is a clip of some of the videos!

Friday

We hosted our very own DaVinci art gallery.

Dr. DaVinci Falmouth

Monday  To start the week, the junior campers had a drawing brainstorming session of what they knew about doctors. Seniors campers spoke to their knowledge and made doctor bags/briefcases out of recycled materials. Both groups created body models with which they could incorporate various systems and organs including the brain and nervous system—which the "big kids" dove into further. = Tuesday  For our doctors, the heart and circulatory system was the focus of Tuesday. They built their own stethoscopes and played heart rate game. This involved doing low intensity versus high intensity activities and then comparing their heart rates/pulses. Wednesday On Wednesday, campers learned about the lungs and the respiratory system. Both seniors and juniors created lung models (of different complexities). Then after talking about how the lungs fill up in a way similar to balloons, we held a balloon party—many campers were able to blow them up with their impressive lung capacities! Thurs...

eARTh - Falmouth

Monday Today was all about learning how to be a resourceful artist. We learned that we can use household items around us to make different art mediums. Today we used eye shadow, Caribic powder, and a textile medium base to create shimmery eye shadow paint. Late on we learned that we can use our own body as art utensils in our group foot and finger painting project. We ended with the concept of using our body as the canvas, with some awesome face painting! Tuesday What a special treat today. The founder of DaVinci Experience, Judy Crosby, came in to do painting demos for the children and talk about earth pigments and homemade paints. Judy holds an art degree from the University of Southern Maine and loves to share her vast knowledge in painting with the children. Later on, the kids got to try their own hand in earth paint, collecting soils and items from the woods to make paints and paint brushes. We learned about why different soils are different colors and got creative with our ...
